Overview

The CIPE Spanish and Latin American Fellowships include the John O'Leary and Patricia Cepeda Fellowship for the Study of Latin America, the Niebla Foundation Travel Fellowship, and the Yale College Class of 2004 Travel Fellowship.

Notice to students applying for funding to support language study, study abroad or Yale Summer Session courses: Due to the volume of applications, the Spanish and Latin American fellowships are only able to offer up to $1500 to support language study, study abroad or Yale Summer Session courses.

CIPE Spanish and Latin American Fellowships - O'Leary and Cepeda Fellowship

  • Supports study-related travel and language study in Latin America
  • Activity must last at least 8 weeks, except in the case of study abroad programs of shorter duration
  • Yale freshmen, sophomores, and juniors

While study abroad programs in Latin America that are earning credit are preferred, proposals justifying the selection of a non-approved program are welcome. Please note that applicants interested in receiving credit for a program not on Yale's Designated list must submit a petition application to Yale Study Abroad by the relevant deadline.

Minimum duration: 8 weeks, unless the proposal is for a summer study abroad program of shorter duration.

Students on an approved semester or year-long study abroad program should meet with a study abroad adviser.

The O'Leary and Cepeda Fellowship accepts applications to support projects which take place in summer and extend into term-time. Applications for such projects should be submitted via the CIPE Summer Fellowships Common Application. For projects which extend through the summer into term-time, students would need to take a Leave of Absence from the University.

The proposed project must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.

Criteria for selection include the proposal's validity, feasibility, and the applicant's academic and other preparation to undertake the proposed project or position.

Eligibility
  • Yale freshmen, sophomores, and juniors
  • Activity must last at least 8 weeks, except in the case of study abroad programs of shorter duration

Special Eligibility Requirements: Interested applicants may schedule an appointment with a Fellowship Adviser; however, meeting with an adviser is not mandatory. Students interested in study abroad should make an appointment with a study abroad adviser.
