These scholarships are for undergraduate students studying at Victoria University of Wellington who plan to connect their studies to the field of Education. The University recognises there are barriers to accessing and succeeding at the University, so preference will be given to awarding this scholarship to students from a migrant or refugee background. The primary purpose of these Scholarships are to mitigate economic barriers so student can access undergraduate study and the transformative potential of a tertiary qualification.
History:
These scholarships have been established by the Deen Welfare Trust with the help of the Muslim community to encourage and assist students who are studying at Victoria University of Wellington, and who experience financial challenges to undertake study at Victoria University of Wellington. The scholarships are meant for groups currently under-represented at Victoria University of Wellington.
These scholarships are open to students entering their first, second, third or final year in undergraduate study who are taking a minimum of one Education-related paper at Victoria University of Wellington. Preference will be given to refugee and/or first or second-generation migrant students.Selection will be based on financial need and satisfactory academic commitment and progress. Factors taken into consideration when assessing financial need may include - high course costs, high transport costs, medical conditions or a disability preventing part-time work, family to support in New Zealand or overseas, any other relevant circumstances.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of one Education-related paper in the year following their scholarship application.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time or part-time in a degree programme at Victoria University of Wellington in the year following application.
- Applicants must be experiencing financial challenges.
