Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal STEM Scholarship

The Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal STEM Scholarship is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled full-time in a STEM undergraduate program at the University of South Australia. This scholarship supports students with a strong desire to succeed and give back to their local communities to complete a university degree.
Eligibility and selection criteria:
- Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander descent
- Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident
- Enrolled in an undergraduate STEM program
- Grade point average (GPA) of 4 or above
- Full-time (preferred)
- Submission of a written statement
Students undertaking an engineering, information technology, science or any health science related program are eligible to apply. The scholarship is available to all year levels, however preference may be given to applicants in their penultimate year (that is, the student will receive scholarship support in the final two years of their program).
Applicants are required to provide a written statement (maximum 500 words) detailing:
- Family heritage and connection to community.
- Reasons for studying current program and how the degree supports future aspirations.
- Academic achievements.
- Community service involvement.
- Financial or educational disadvantage (disclosed at applicants’ discretion).
Shortlisted applicants will not normally be required to be interviewed but may be asked to attend an interview to assist in the decision-making process.
Full-time recipients will be given preference. Part-time applicants will be considered where there is a demonstrated need to study part-time. Pro-rata payments will apply to part-time enrolment.
The scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement and passion for the STEM program being studied, as demonstrated in the written statement.
Recipients may be in receipt of another scholarship or grant administered by UniSA, however previous recipients of other Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal Scholarships are not eligible to apply.

Important: When you apply for this grant, you will automatically be assessed against the eligibility criteria for all of the grants listed within the Aboriginal Grouped Schemes table. Once you have submitted your online application via myScholarships, you will be contacted by the UniSA Scholarships team within 5-7 business days and advised what supporting documentation you are required to provide in order to be considered for the grant(s) that you have been deemed eligible for. Please note:
- If you are eligible for a grant, it does not mean you will be awarded the grant.
- do not provide any supporting documentation until you have been advised to. Value: up to $10,000 (up to $5,000 per year for a maximum of two years for full-time students)
Payment will be in two instalments:
