Description
Established to endow awards for incoming undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students recommended by the West End House Boys & Girls Club and approved by the Director of Financial Aid Services. The Fund will provide for a multiple-year award, renewable for up to 8 semesters. The recipient must remain in good academic standing. In the event that, during any particular academic year, the West End House has no incoming student to recommend, the scholarship may be given as a one-time award to an undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The recipient must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in good academic standing with financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Preference will be given to Massachusetts residents. Additional preference will be given to students who are the first in their family to attend college.

Henry L. Barr was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was admitted to the Massachusetts and Federal District Bar, 1973. He received his B.A. with honors from University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1968, and received his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1972, where he served as Editor of The Environmental Law Review. Mr. Barr went on to receive his MBA from Suffolk University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1979. After becoming a practicing attorney, he began his legal career as a Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the Superior Court for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1978 he was appointed to the position of Administrator of Courts for Massachusetts which he held from 1978 to 1991. Mr. Barr has served on numerous Committees and Boards including: President, Massachusetts Lender’s Association; Advisory Committee of The Judicial Training Institute; Member of Massachusetts Bar Association where he was a recipient of 21st Century Award. In the field of non-profit and philanthropy, Mr. Barr has served in numerous roles including as President of the West End Boys and Girls Club of Allston, 2001-2004; Board of Directors, UMass Amherst Foundation, 2004-Present; Board of Trustees of the Metrowest Community Health Care Foundation, 2004-Present; and Board of Advisors for the UMass Amherst center for Public Policy and Administration, 2003-Present. Mr. Barr has acted as consultant and counsel to several lending companies from 1973 to the present. Mr. Barr resides in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Eligibility Requirements
For students with an affiliation with West End House Boys and Girls Club in Allston, MA. If no student selected from the Club, fund will support a student with a declared major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, who is in good academic standing, and has demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to Massachusetts residents and those who are the first in their family to attend college.
