Overview

The measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, g-2, represents a very stringent test of the Standard Model. The most precise measurement so far, obtained at Fermilab (Chicago), shows a discrepancy of about 4 standard deviations with the theoretical prediction. A new measurement based on the data collected in 2019/20 aimed at improving the precision by a factor of two is expected this year.

The measurement of the muon g-2 is obtained by three ingredients: the anomalous spin precession frequency; the beam dynamics corrections; high precision measurement of the magnetic field.

The Liverpool group is involved in all these aspects.

The student is expected to contribute to the analysis of the anomalous spin precession frequency with the large data sample collected in 2021/22 which should allow to improve the measurement of the muon g-2 by a factor of four.

The advertised position is open to UK, EU and international candidates. Women and minority groups in STEM are explicitly encouraged to apply.

The funding will be available for 42 months and will cover both the stipend and UK or international PhD fees.
