About
Established in 2017, the global diet and activity research (GDAR) Network (www.gdarnet.org) is focused on built and food environments to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCD). Led by the University of Cambridge, Network members are in South Africa (University of Cape Town and University of Witwatersrand), Nigeria (University of Lagos), Kenya (Kenya Medical Research Institute), Cameroon (University of Yaounde I), Jamaica (University of West Indies), Brazil (Federal University of Minas Gerais), and UN Habitat. A long-term goal of the GDAR Network is to generate evidence for sustainable, resilient NCD prevention related to healthy diets and physical activity in the broader context of urban development and climate emergencies in diverse low and middle-income settings.
Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the current project of the Network running from Sept 2021-Aug 2025 is GDARSpaces, a syndemic approach to the prevention of diet- and activity-related NCDs in the context of urbanisation and climate change. As part of this project, the Network is offering a scholarship for one student per year from a partner country (South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Jamaica, Brazil) to undertake the MPhil in Population Health Sciences (Global Health theme).
Applicants to the Global Health theme from these countries will automatically be considered for this scholarship.
As part of the scholarship, in addition to tuition fees and a stipend of £20,000, the successful candidates will join the early career researcher forum of the Network, offering an opportunity to build their peer network with researchers globally as well as accessing additional training opportunities. In addition, the incumbent will be supported to identify a dissertation topic using data from the Network’s research activities.
The applicant must follow the Global Health stream of the MPhil in Population Health Sciences, and must select Global Health as their first choice theme on the application form.
