Mr. Thomas B Gillies, a judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, presented to the Council of the Auckland University College in the year of 1884, the sum of £3,000 for the purpose of founding two science Scholarships, one to be called the Gillies Scholarship in memory of the late Mrs Gillies, the other to be called the Sinclair Scholarship, to assist students experiencing financial hardship. The Scholarship was founded for the encouragement of the study of Chemistry and Physics
