The Scholarship was established under the wills of Miss E W D Brown and Mrs G F Russell in honour of their father, Professor F D Brown, Foundation Professor of Chemistry and Experimental Physics at Auckland University College, 1883–1914.

Selection process:

• Application is made to the Scholarships Office
• A Selection Committee assesses the applications
• The Scholarship is awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Selection Committee
