Normally these awards are made for the summer months. The award is for part of the stipend paid to an undergraduate student who performs research under the supervision of a Chemistry faculty member, who contributes the remainder of the student's stipend. Students must be registered in a full-time bachelor's degree program in the sciences (preferably chemistry) and have completed at least first year. Students may not be registered as full-time students during the tenure of the award.

The late John and Mary Spinks. J.W.T. Spinks joined the Department of Chemistry - Chemical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in 1930, was Head of the department from 1948-1949, Dean of Graduate Studies from 1949-1959, President of the University from 1959-1974, and Professor Emeritus from 1974-1997.
