Overview

Joseph Shotwell was a pilot, A&P mechanic, director of maintenance, airport manager, little league baseball coach, husband, and loving father to his eight children. Joe lived 67 years serving aviation, his family, the community, and his friends until his death in 2000. He earned his A&P mechanic’s license at Purdue University where he helped to build the university’s department fleet of restored DC 3s and salvaged C 47s. Joe joined Hillenbrand Industries in 1961 as a mechanic, co-pilot, and airfield manager. Over the next 35 years, Joe accumulated over 6,000 hours of flight time and became the full-time director of maintenance.

Eligibility
  • Have a diploma from an accredited high school; and Be a current resident of Ripley or Franklin Counties; and
  • Be accepted to Purdue University full-time course of study in the field of Aviation Technology/Mechanics;
  • Submit proof of admission to Purdue; and Show community involvement; and
  • Demonstrate financial need; and
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator
