Maureen “Mo” Clancy Memorial Scholarship
The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County
e Maureen “Mo” Clancy Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Maureen Bernadette “Mo” Clancy who was born in October 1960 in Los Angeles, California. A sweet Irish girl, Maureen graduated from Glendale High School and held a bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Phoenix. Affectionately known as “Mo,” Maureen worked over 25 years in Physical Therapy, locally for Arroyo Grande Hospital. In 2006, Mo was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but it didn’t dampen her personal strength and determination to conquer the disease and her goals no matter what life brought. In 2007, she married Seamus Burns in Ireland and accomplished finishing the Boston Marathon, the penultimate event in endurance running. Mo went on to complete other races, triathlons, joined the SurvivOars, the dragon boat racing team of women cancer survivors out of Morro Bay and became a valued member of the Central Coast Cancer Challenge team, helping with the Survivor’s Ceremony that raised money for local cancer support services. For the last eight years of her life, Mo worked diligently with “Turn Up The Volume” for the Ovarian Cancer Foundation, creating awareness and educating women on how to detect the disease. She passed out her signature wristbands with the saying “No “Mo” Cancer,” worn by many friends, acquaintances and family. Mo passed in 2014, but “lived” to help others. She will forever be remembered as a strong-willed, loving and passionate person. Her spirit will forever be in the hearts of those who loved her. Seamus Burns and Heather Hellman, to remember Mo’s legacy of service, love and compassion and help a young woman realize her dreams, established the Maureen “Mo” Clancy Memorial Girls Track Scholarship in 2014. The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded annually
