John and Yvonne Hsu Edmisten in honor of Allan Voigt M.D. Scholarship
The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County
The John and Yvonne Hsu Edmisten Scholarship in Memory of Allan Voigt M.D. was established by the Edmisten’s in memory of their close friend, Allan Voigt. This scholarship was created to support students who plan to major with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Performing Arts, or Mathematics) degree. Dr. Allan Voigt was born in Canova, South Dakota in 1924, as one of eight children. He attended Willamette University, served in the U.S. army, and then went to medical school in Portland, Oregon. He spent time in Minneapolis for specialty training in internal medicine and later opened a medical practice in Napa Valley, California. He retired in San Luis Obispo after a distinguished medical career. After private practice, he served as president of the California Medical Association, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Desert. Allan had a passion for the performing arts. Locally, he was a generous supporter and avid fan of the San Luis Obispo Symphony, Founder and Legacy member of the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center, much-beloved contributing member of Opera Lovers Meet, an enthusiastic patron and supporter of the Pacific Repertory Opera and many other arts groups. Yvonne Hsu Edmisten was born in 1936 in Shanghai, China and came to the United States from Hong Kong in 1959 to attend college. Yvonne and John Edmisten married in 1961 and moved to San Luis Obispo and attended Cal Poly in 1962. Yvonne received her B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1964 and John received his B.S. degree in Engineering in 1965. Yvonne worked at Mary’s Help Hospital and in 1968 John joined the faculty in Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly. Yvonne found her love of opera and the performing arts and became one of the founders of Opera Lovers Meet. John was a professor of Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly. The recipient of this scholarship demonstrates passion and involvement like those of Allan, Yvonne, and John including academic achievement in a STEAM major and involvement in the performing arts.
