Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship

The Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Brian Waterbury. Brian was a teacher and coach at San Luis Obispo High School for 30 years. He taught all levels of mathematics, but truly enjoyed the Honors Trigonometry course, as well as teaching Computer Science, Physics, and P.E. He coached both boys and girls cross country and track, from 1973 through 1987, before heading to the District office for a few years, to run the District’s Ed Tech program. When he returned to teaching, he continued to stay involved in helping with track and cross country meets, or simply running with the team as a personal workout. In addition, Brian was an accomplished runner. He competed in over 400 races in the community, ranging in distance from the mile to marathons. His PR in the Master’s marathon was 2:43.12 at Cal International in Sacramento in 1988. He was most proud of his finish at the Boston Marathon in 2001. He ran 2:51.09 and placed 8th in the 50/59 division and 391st out of 12,000 runners. His legacy continues with the Morro Bay Recreations Department’s Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier run, typically held in July. He loved running on the beach in Manhattan Beach, while competing for Mira Costa HS, and founded the Rock to Pier run to give community members a new competitive race in 1970. Six miles on the beach, this run was put on by the San Luis Distance Club, which he also co-founded in 1974, until 1986 when the Morro Bay Rec Dept. took it over.

Open to graduating seniors from San Luis Obispo High School who participated in both the cross country and track teams, demonstrates high academic excellence in mathematics and who plan to attend community college or four-year university.
