Miss Clarice Bell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1997 from the estate of Miss Clarice Bell, a music teacher of Christchurch. The estate was left to the University in 1973, in memory of her pet Cockatoo “Cockie”, who was a family friend for over 40 years, to be used by reason of her affection and concern for animals
- The award shall be known as The Miss Clarice Bell Memorial Scholarship.
- One scholarship will be awarded to a Lincoln University student engaged in, or planning to be engaged in, full time research leading to the award of a PhD degree.
- Applicants are required to be in the process of, or intending to, conduct research directed to the prevention and protection against disease and suffering of animals (including domestic animals and pets).
- The scholarship shall have a tenure which shall be determined by the selection committee but will not exceed 3 years from the commencement of studies.
- The annual value of the award shall be at the discretion of the selection committee based upon the income from the capital fund.
The scholarship shall pay the following:
i) an emolument equivalent to that paid by the Lincoln University Doctoral Scholarship, to be paid in fortnightly instalments. ii) tuition fees equivalent to that payable by a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident iii) an amount of $5,000 per annum for the scholar’s research expenses iv) a maximum of $550 for reimbursement of thesis production costs provided the thesis is handed in within six months of the scholarship completion date.
Special Selection Criteria
Applicants doctoral research must be directed to the prevention and protection against disease and suffering of animals.
