Overview

Named after former Vice Present and Emory Alum Alben W. Barkley, The Barkley Forum for Debate, Deliberation, and Dialogue is Emory’s nationally ranked intercollegiate policy debate team. Each year, the Barkley Forum and the Emory Scholars Program collaborate to select students who demonstrate promise in developing the Scholars Qualities while also being exceptionally talented in policy debate. The Woodruff Debate Scholarship provides full tuition, fees, on campus room, and meals. Woodruff Debate Scholars are members of the Emory College Scholars Program and participate in a wide range of annual programming aimed at developing the Scholars Qualities.

Woodruff Debate Scholars are deliberative and highly engaged leaders in the Barkley Forum and their classes. They are expected to remain active members of the Barkley Forum for the duration of their undergraduate experience and use their debate skills to cultivate the Scholars’ Qualities while acting in service to humanity. Debate Scholars are provided numerous opportunities to participate in Barkley Forum. These include competitive policy debate, civic and international debate, Atlanta Urban Debate League, and supporting deliberative dialogues on the campus.

Eligibility

High school students interested in applying to be a Woodruff Debate Scholar must do the following:

  • Apply Regular Decision to Emory College by November 15
  • Select in the application that you are interested in being considered for merit-based scholarships
  • Reach out directly to the Barkley Forum Director, Dr. Mikaela Malsin (mmalsin@emory.edu) to request information and apply to participate in the Debate program by December 1. See the Barkley Forum Scholarships page for application materials and additional information.
