Philippe Rey Music Award
Concordia University
The Philippe Rey Music Award was established to honor the life and legacy of Philippe Rey, who passed away in 2018. The award is intended to encourage and recognize excellence or potential in undergraduate students currently enrolled in a program from the Department of Music. Philippe Rey was many things to many people in the underground European music community; a gifted and self-effacing musician, a tireless promoter of DIY shows, and a passionate advocate of experimental music representing one half of the Atelier Ciseaux label. Not that he would ever have vaunted these achievements; everyone who knew him would describe him as a humble, honest and quietly loving friend. He lived for music, and was also a respected musician of Sincabeza, Guimo, Nuer, Enough, and more recently, Parm & Giani, until his late 30s, before he chose a more corporate path. He always continued to make music and collected a range of instruments, most of which have been donated to Concordia University’s Department of Music and some of which were sold to contribute towards this Award. He supported independent musicians with his label, Atelier Ciseaux, many of whom have expressed that their lives were enriched by Philippe’s support, labour and love. He kept a DIY ethos about music, but with razor sharp professionalism and perfectionism. This Award is a testament to a great musician, friend and human being. The Award shall be granted through competition, based on academic merit to a full-time or part-time undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelors /Baccalaureate degree from the Department of Music at the University.
