Leah Sherman graduated from Sir George Williams College and did graduate work at New York University. After teaching at Baron Byng High School in Montreal, she joined the faculty at Sir George Williams University (later Concordia University) where she was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Fine Arts and was hired in 1960 as its first full time faculty member.

An early researcher in the history of Canadian Art Education, Leah Sherman has collaborated with Suzanne Lemerise on cross-cultural research in the history of Quebec art education. The non-renewable Leah Sherman Award in Art Education is intended to encourage students entering their final year of the BFA, with a specialization in Art Education - whose commitment to the vocation of the teaching of Art reflects the goals and values of Leah Sherman.
