Ralph & Alice Steiner Family Scholarship
Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
Background:
The Ralph & Alice Steiner Family Scholarship was established in honor of Ralph and Alice who lived and farmed near New Holstein for over 50 years. Ralph graduated from New Holstein High School and Alice from Hilbert High School, both in 1951. Together they had a family of 6 children who all graduated from New Holstein High School and furthered their education at various institutions around the country. The family lived on the farm where Ralph was born. Along with farming, Ralph also drove a school bus for New Holstein for 25 years, including many sports team trips. Perhaps no one in New Holstein history has seen more Husky games than Ralph! Both Ralph and Alice were very committed members of their church and community. Ralph served in the Navy and as Town of New Holstein Supervisor and Chairman, County Board Supervisor, and Farm Bureau President for Calumet County among many other volunteer roles. Alice focused on the family and later was a bank teller, and also Ralph’s back office, improving the wording in many of his talks. Alice also enjoyed reading to children at various area schools. They were always continually learning and open to new ideas. Together, they were known as the Honeymooners, just like the famous Ralph and Alice in the 1950’s TV show. They lived that out by providing guidance to engaged couples for over 20 years in the Green Bay Diocese. No matter how busy they were, the couple always made sure to slow down to greet someone and see how they could help. Even after Alice passed away at age 86, Ralph still goes out of his way to ask how others are doing. Virtually every time one of us, their children, comes back to visit in New Holstein we run into people who know Ralph and Alice. They always tell us how they helped, and how they chose to brighten another’s day. This scholarship, in their honor for lifelong service, was established by their family to recognize students who also show great community involvement.
