Nicolet Grandpa Education Degree Scholarship
Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
Background:
Norman Van Hulle was born near Oconto, WI in 1924. He used his Valedictorian Scholarship to begin his career as a Project Engineer, which culminated in being one of the five founding fathers of Custom Machinery Design (CMD) in Appleton. The company grew to employ over 100 full time employees. After his retirement in 1992 at age 67, Norman “Grandpa” Van Hulle pursued his first love – education. He visited his grandson’s first-grade classroom at Nicolet Elementary School in Menasha to teach staff members how to operate the school’s new computers. He found so much more to do there - from tutoring children who’d fallen behind to grading papers for busy teachers - that he decided to volunteer regularly, which he did every morning until he was no longer able to in 2014.
Norman set up an education fund for each of his 10 grandchildren and created a 529 tuition savings plan for each of his great-grandchildren. Since 2003 when Norman was awarded the Daniel P. Spalding Volunteer Educator Award, he has presented an annual $1,000 scholarship award to a Menasha High School graduate that was pursuing a degree in teaching. Norman established the Nicolet Grandpa Education Degree Scholarship Fund, to continue into perpetuity, and to honor the hundreds of “Nicolet grandchildren” he loved so much.
