Overview

Background:

Maurice (pronounced “Morris”) Johnson was born in Neenah, Wisconsin in 1949. He grew up in the Town of Menasha and graduated as the valedictorian from Menasha High School in 1968. As an enthusiastic booster of MHS’s athletic teams, he served as statistician for the basketball squad. He was also editor in chief of the Nicolet Year Book of 1968. Mr. Johnson spent four years at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, graduating in 1972 with honors in German Language and Literature. He participated in the Junior Year Abroad Program in Freiburg, Germany. In addition, he earned a Masters of Arts degree in German/Comparative Literature from Cornell University in 1973. From 1973 to 1997, Mr. Johnson worked for the New York City-based company Associated Merchandising Corporation, a buying cooperative of international department stores such as Bloomingdale’s and Marshall Field. Most of his tenure was spent in international product development and sourcing. From 1998 until his retirement in 2017, Mr. Johnson served as Associate Professor of Fashion Merchandising Management at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology / State University of New York.

Eligibility

Eligibility: (taken into consideration to determine recipients)

• Graduating high school seniors attending Menasha High School • Planning to attend an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university or technical school as a full-time student • Demonstrates strong academic achievement • Community service

Award Amount:

Two $2,500 non-renewable scholarship awards for cost of attendance, payable for the fall semester.

Selection:

Recipients are recommended each spring by the Menasha High School Scholarship Selection Committee.

Collecting the Award & Payment Procedure:

Recipients must fill out and submit Scholarship Acceptance Form and Scholarship Verification Form through the Scholarship Portal (https://www.grantinterface.com/Home/Logon?urlkey=cffvrscholar). Recipients are required to provide supporting documents as instructed in the Scholarship Verification Form, such as class registration/list with credits listed, proof of major, grade transcript, etc. After approval of online Scholarship Verification Form, the scholarship check will be paid directly to the school the recipient will be attending. The Community Foundation communicates with students via email; it is the student’s responsibility to keep their Scholarship Portal account updated with their current email address.

Loss of Eligibility:

Failure to register at an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university, or technical school as a full-time student.
