Mabel R. McClanahan Scholarship

Background:
This scholarship was established by Mabel R. McClanahan who was born and raised on a farm in western WI and graduated from high school at age 16. Mabel married, had a son, and moved to Appleton in 1946 to work for Crane Engineering Sales, Inc., where she would remain for 40 years. She started her career at Crane as a secretarybookkeeper and finished as vice-president and chief financial officer. Active in politics, Mabel worked for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. She was a WI delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business. As a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, Mabel conducted leadership training workshops throughout the Midwest and made numerous trips to Washington, D.C., to meet with presidents and first ladies. Mabel was a member of the Board of Education for the Appleton Area School District for eleven years, including nine years as board president. She served on several other boards in the area, including those of Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin, Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce, and was the first woman to serve as director of the Northern State Bank. She was the Appleton Post-Crescent Woman of the Year for 1972-73. Mabel is listed in “Who’s Who of American Women”, the “World Who’s Who in Commerce and Industry”, the “Who’s Who in the Midwest”, the “National Gold Book of Distinguished Women of the United Sates”, and “Wisconsin Women: A Gifted Heritage”.
Eligibility: (taken into consideration to determine recipients)
• Graduating female seniors from an Appleton public high school • Planning to attend an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university, or technical school as a full-time student • Planning to pursue a business degree • Minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA
Award Amount:
One $1,500 scholarship award for tuition expenses, renewable annually for up to 4 years (total award $6,000).
Selection:
Recipients are recommended each spring by the Community Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee.
Collecting the Award & Payment Procedure:
Recipients must fill out and submit Scholarship Acceptance Form and Scholarship Verification Form through the Scholarship Portal (https://www.grantinterface.com/Home/Logon?urlkey=cffvrscholar). Recipients are required to provide supporting documents as instructed in the Scholarship Verification Form, such as class registration/list with credits listed, proof of major, grade transcript, etc. After approval of online Scholarship Verification Form, the scholarship check will be paid directly to the school the recipient will be attending. The Community Foundation communicates with students via email; it is the student’s responsibility to keep their Scholarship Portal account updated with their current email address.
Loss of Eligibility:
Failure to maintain full-time student status, majoring in business, with a minimum 3.5 GPA annually.
