Overview

Background:

Although both Lee and Elaine Martin were raised in Wisconsin, they followed different paths to realize their dreams. After her three daughters had started school, Elaine was approached to see if she had any interest in working in a pre-school. Always wanting to be a teacher, she started taking classes at Fox Valley Technical College. This led to a career in a Parent Co-Operative pre-school in Shawano for 20 years. Subsequently, Elaine became a co-owner and associate of a successful pre-school program in Neenah for another 10 years. Lee attended the University of Wisconsin after graduating from Neenah High School. After four years of military service, he furthered his education at the University of Washington. This led to a career of nearly 30 years at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. before he returned to Appleton to retire. Both Lee and Elaine continue to realize the importance of education by volunteering as tutors for the Appleton Area school district where they tutor students in reading and math. They also serve as English as a Second Language tutors for a local literacy organization. Lee and Elaine feel strongly that as the use of technology increases, education will be critical. Scholarships will be offered at Fox Valley Technical College in hopes of aiding students to achieve success in the workplace.
