Kaukauna Community Family of Funds Leo and Frances Driessen Family Scholarship Fund
Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
Background:
Leo and Fran Driessen originally established this scholarship in honor of their son, Chris Driessen. Chris died suddenly on September 12, 1997. Chris graduated from Kaukauna High School and pursued a degree at UW-Stout. He received the Gold Medallion award for Outstanding Academics and allaround student. He went on to receive two master’s degrees. After Leo and Frances passed away, the family wanted to update the scholarship as a family scholarship to also honor their parents/family. Leo and Frances were married in 1946 and had 5 children. Fran and Leo traveled extensively and held fond memories of their trip to France. Over the years, Fran was very involved in the affairs of the church and donated countless hours of her time to various committees and organizations. Leo eagerly embraced life and all the opportunities and challenges it offered, accepted difficulties and painful losses, and epitomized his belief that people don’t stop playing, working, and learning because they get old; they get old because they stop playing, working and learning. He remained active until well into his 95th year. Honorably discharged after three years in the Pacific during World War II, Leo later joined the Army Reserves, retiring in 1967 as a Command Sergeant Major. He participated in the Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC in 2010. Leo and his friend Oscar Boldt were founding members of the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.
