Harriet and John Rietveld Nursing Scholarship Fund
Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
Background:
Harriet and John Rietveld were long-time residents of Combined Locks. Harriet, a 1944 graduate of Kimberly High School, married John, after he came to America from Holland in 1950. Harriet was a homemaker who instilled the love of learning in her three children through reading and life experiences. John, a proud Marine, was a community leader who served as a Village Trustee, Boy Scout Leader, red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor, and in several roles at Sr. Paul’s church. He also served as the Chaplin for the American Legion for over 17 years conducting veteran’s honors for countless fellow veterans. After Harriet’s passing in 2009, John created this scholarship because he was so impressed by the level of care and concern Harriet received from the nurses who supported her. Likewise, John received a great deal of care and support following a fall that eventually led to his passing in 2022. This scholarship is being carried forth by their children Mike and Sally to honor their parents.
