Overview

Background:

This scholarship was established in honor and memory of Don Loker, a 1959 graduate of Appleton West High School. While in high school, he competed in track and field, winning the Class A state mile in 1958 and 1959. Don went on to the University of Wisconsin, where he was a three-year letter winner in cross country and track and field from 1960 to 1963, competing mainly in the mile run. After graduating in 1963, he taught mathematics at Madison West High School until his retirement in 1998. Don coached cross country and track and field for most of his career at Madison West and was also the athletic director for four years. After retiring from teaching, Don continued to work athletic events; mainly cross county, track and field, and gymnastics but also swimming, tennis and golf. A humble man, Don was never one to brag or talk much about his life at school. Throughout his time as a coach, he received many awards and accolades including a plaque from a rival track team thanking him for his unselfish efforts in the encouragement and support of young athletes regardless of the school. They noted that he was an inspiration to them all. What a wonderful legacy to leave behind from a career that meant so much.
