Andrew Davel Memorial Scholarship
Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
Background:
The memory of Andy Davel has been commemorated since 1987 with the Andrew Davel Memorial Scholarship. Andy Davel was the valedictorian of the Menasha High School class of 1984 and widely recognized as a leader in both academics and athletics on the campus. Andy was a top student in his high school class and a two-sport athlete for the Bluejays. Andy was a standout football player and served as one of the team’s captains as a senior during the 1983 season. He was a two-year starter on both offense and defense and earned All-Fox Valley Association honors for the Bluejays. As an offensive guard, Andy was a consistently excellent pass protector. He played defensive end in Menasha’s base 5-2 defense and was known as fierce hitter and disciplined defender. A constant presence in the Menasha High School weight room, Andy inspired others with his commitment to making himself better every day. Andy also expanded his athletic exploits when he joined the track and field team where he participated in the discus throw and shot put. Andy’s academic excellence and desire to continue his football career led him to Lawrence University after being recruited by legendary Lawrence coach Ron Roberts. Andy won two letters for the Vikings and earned a starting job at guard as a sophomore in 1985. Andy studied biology and chemistry and planned a career in sports medicine. He also was active in the campus community and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While Andy was on winter break from Lawrence in January 1986, he was out with a group of friends in Menasha and Neenah on a Friday evening. Andy was stabbed in a senseless street incident in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 6. He was rushed to Theda Clark Regional Medical Center, which was just blocks away, by his friends, but the chest wound would prove fatal. Andy died surrounded by family and friends on January 9, 1986. As a tribute to Andy, a group of Andy’s closest friends began pursuing a scholarship in his name. It has been given to a scholarathlete at Menasha High School every year since 1987.
