Dr. Loether, emeritus and founding faculty member of the sociology department at CSUDH, was greatly respected by his colleagues and his many students. Dr. Herman J. Loether established the Social Systems Research Council (SSRC) in addition to teaching Sociology at CSUDH for 30 years (after teaching for 10 years at CSU-Los Angeles). Dr. Loether also founded the Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) Chapter at CSUDH and served as the advisor for many years. Dr. Herman J. Loether was actively involved in the development of the SSRC (now called the Urban Community Research Center), and took great pride in teaching CSUDH students about doing hands on sociological research with community partners.
