Overview

Brown and Caldwell offers a scholarship designed to encourage and support students who are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation and have a desire to improve our world by developing their skills and knowledge in preparation for a career in the environmental profession.

Applications for 2023 are closed and will reopen in 2024. This year’s applicants will be notified of their status by the end of May.

The scholarship provides

  • $1,000 for up to four (4) years of schooling (for a total of $4,000).
  • The scholarship will be distributed annually as long as the eligibility criteria continue to be met.
  • A laptop computer or tablet (awarded the first year only).
Eligibility

Criteria

Candidates for the Brown and Caldwell Navajo Nation Scholarship Program must be:

  • A United States citizen or permanent resident.
  • A full-time student enrolled at an accredited two-year junior or four-year undergraduate college, or a senior in high school with - a letter of acceptance from the college or university to be attended.
  • Have or intend to declare a major in civil, chemical, mechanical, electrical or environmental engineering or one of the environmental sciences (e.g. geology, hydrogeology, ecology).
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent on a 5.0 scale).
  • An enrolled member of the Navajo Nation.

Required Documents

All candidates must submit with a completed application:

  • An essay of 500 words or less, “My role in creating a sustainable world.”
  • Two written recommendations, with at least one from a high school or university official (e.g. advisor, professor).
  • High school counselor or university academic adviser’s name, phone number, and email address.
  • An official transcript of your academic record.
  • A resume (including previous work experience)
  • An official transcript of your academic record.
  • Evidence of a declared major.

Returning Navajo Nation Scholarship Recipients Criteria

  • Have been awarded the Navajo Nation Scholarship under the Initial Eligibility requirements.
  • Completed a full year of schooling (2 semesters or 3 quarters) as an award recipient during the year immediately preceding a request for Continuing Eligibility.
  • Have a declared major in civil, chemical, or environmental engineering, or one of the environmental sciences (e.g., geology, hydrogeology, biology, ecology, industrial hygiene toxicology).
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent on a 5.0 scale).
