Overview

The Freedom Scholarship is a public/private partnership scholarship made available through generous private donations and the State of South Dakota to assist South Dakota students with financial need. Eligible students must:

  • Maintain South Dakota Residency
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the awarding institution
  • Meet a minimum 2.00 GPA requirement
  • Be pursuing a baccalaureate degree
  • Graduate in five years or less
  • Commit in writing to live and work in South Dakota for three years post graduation.
  • Acknowledge failure to meet any of these requirements will result in the conversion from scholarship to interest-bearing loan

Black Hills State University will offer this award annually to students as a part of their financial aid package with no additional application required.

Eligibility

BHSU SCHOLARSHIPS OF DISTINCTION BHSU’s Scholarships of Distinction program awards merit scholarships of up to $4,000 per year to qualifying new first-time undergraduate students, while funds are available.

Awards Based On: Unweighted High School GPA and ACT/SAT Composite Scores or a Test Optional pathway.

Requirements:

  • Apply for admission to BHSU prior to February 1st.
  • First-time undergraduate students only (no prior attendance at any college or university, after high school graduation).
  • Seeking a degree from BHSU (Non-degree seeking are not eligible).
