James & Eileen Mary W. Collins Absher Scholarship
BECKLEY AREA FOUNDATION
David and Becky Absher, along with their daughter Deirdre, initiated efforts to build this scholarship fund as a memorial to David’s parents. Jim, a US Army Air Force corporal, met Eileen in London during World War II. They were married in England, and at the end of the war Jim brought his wife and daughter home to the family homestead near Hawks Nest State Park. David was born after they built the home where they spent 60 years of marriage. Jim worked in the family – owned sawmill and general store, was a coal miner and retired from the WV Division of Highways as the Fayette County Supervisor of Roads. Proud grandparents, they taught family members “the value of an education, the importance of making a contribution to society, and our calling by God to help others.” Once the endowment is fully funded, an annual need based scholarship honoring this couple will be awarded to a graduate of a Fayette County high school.
Eligibility:
- Need based;
