Overview

The purpose of the Commonwealth Scholarships Program is to assist students of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. There are two types of Commonwealth Scholarships available. Some students may be eligible for both:

Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (ICAS) – This scholarship assists with the costs or relocation and/or accommodation costs; Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) – This scholarship assists students with the costs of studying.

Funding for the Scholarships is subject to change on a year by year basis. Scholarships will be allocated proportionate to need and assessed in accordance with the ISSP Needs Assessment Framework (Scholarships). Additional consideration is given to the requirement to relocate from a remote or regional area. Typical scholarship values are:

ICAS – Funding is limited to $3,000.00 for a calendar year; ICECS – Scholarships from $500 (low need) up to $2,500.00 (high need) for a calendar year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for these Scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and state that he/she identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait - Islander person and is recognised by his/her community as a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Confirmation of Aboriginality signed by an authorised Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person or organisation, or by - Statutory Declaration;
  • Be enrolled or intending to enrol as a student at Notre Dame in an undergraduate or sub-bachelor program leading to - undergraduate study, including an enabling program;
  • Demonstrate financial hardship;
  • Not be in receipt of a concurrent Student start-up Scholarship or Loan through Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ - - Affairs for the same purpose;
  • Not be in receipt of a Commonwealth Scholarship awarded prior to 2017.
