Overview

Gavin Wanganeen is the first Aboriginal Australian to receive an AFL life membership after playing 300 official matches. He is also a premiership star, Brownlow medalist, five-time all Australian and Best-and-Fairest winner with Port Adelaide Football Club. He is a role model for Aboriginal youth in Australia and UniSA is the first university in Australia which has identified a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education in its charter.

Value: $5,000 per year up to a maximum of $20,000 provided the recipient continues to meet the scholarship criteria and maintain satisfactory academic performance. Payment will be made in two instalments of $2,500 each, after the Study Period 2 and 5 census dates. Pro-rata payments will apply for part-time enrolment.

The recipient is required to act as a positive ambassador for the scholarship to encourage support. Continuance of the scholarship is subject to satisfactory academic performance and the recipient should maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or above. Please note that previous recipients of any Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship are not eligible to apply for other Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarships.

Once you have submitted your online application via myScholarships, you will be contacted by the UniSA Scholarships team within 5-7 business days and advised what supporting documentation you are required to provide in order to be considered for the grant(s) that you have been deemed eligible for. Please note:

If you are eligible for a grant, it does not mean you will be awarded the grant. do not provide any supporting documentation until you have been advised to.

Eligibility

Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial disadvantage and a personal written statement. The applicant's written statement should outline:

  • Reasons for studying their current program.
  • Academic achievements.
  • Community service involvement.
  • Future career goals.
