Overview

The Georg Walter Leitner Program in International and Comparative Political Economy invites applications from graduate and undergraduate students at Yale University whose research focuses on political economy. Funds are available for Ph.D. candidates to prepare for dissertation research and to conduct research on approved dissertation projects. The Leitner Program also supports graduate student training relevant for the study of political economy. Additionally, funds are available for senior essay support for undergraduates whose essays will focus on some aspect of comparative or international political economy, and for travel fellowships for undergraduates at any level to explore some aspect of the field. The latter may be used to support an internship or a research project. Grants range from $500 to $5000. Priority will be given to students who regularly participate in the activities of the program.

A brief written report of the experience must be submitted at the completion of the project. Recipients may be asked to offer a seminar or presentation of their field project results when they return to the Yale campus. Any publication or public presentations resulting from their projects should acknowledge the support of "The Georg Walter Leitner Program in International and Comparative Political Economy."

MacMillan Center Fellowship Info Sessions:

Friday, October 13, 2023, at 12:00 pm - https://yale.zoom.us/j/96391224526

Friday, November 10, 2023, at 12:00 pm - https://yale.zoom.us/j/98673024577

To accommodate these unprecedented circumstances, The MacMillan Center has also relaxed the restrictions on how the fellowship funds can be used. Students will be allowed to use funds to pay for survey firms’ contracts, data sets, books and journal subscriptions, fees associated with online access to archives and libraries, and fees for digitizing documents. The student’s advisor has confirmed that these resources are absolutely necessary for the research. All surveys have to receive IRB approval before they can be carried out. These requests will be approved on the case-by-case basis, and must be verified with Julia Muravnik before they are incurred.

Application Information: ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE THROUGH THIS DATABASE.

A complete application MUST include the following:

  • A written description (1 to 5 pages maximum) of the project for which you seek support including location and duration, and, for undergraduates, an indication of how you believe this project will contribute to your understanding of international or comparative political economy. Indicate if your project is connected with a proposed senior essay.
  • A budget of your total estimated travel expenses and all sources of revenue including funds requested in this application.
  • Attestation of proficiency in language(s) of the project site.

  • A copy of your most recent transcript. In order to obtain one please go to http://www.yale.edu/sis/ and print it as a PDF file.
  • One letter of recommendation from a Yale faculty member who can comment knowledgeably on your project.

Applicants will be notified of the committee's decision by early May.

Restrictions to Use of Award: The Leitner Program reserves the right to audit your use of its funds. Recipients are advised to keep a log of all expenses associated with their projects, and to save all receipts in case an audit is requested for any reason. If recipients travel under the award, submission of the used airline ticket upon completion of the project is required.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All undergraduate students must adhere to the Yale University International Travel Policy. For more information go to http://www.yale.edu/yalecol/international/travel/policy.html

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University Policy and any other applicable regulations. To see if your project needs to be reviewed, for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the IRB process and requirements go to http://www.yale.edu/hsc/Investigator/Student_projects.pdf .
