It is not necessary to register through the Grants and Fellowships database to apply for this award, however, it is necessary to contact Dean Harper-Mangels for more information.*** The DDRA Program provides fellowships for 6-12 months of research overseas to doctoral students who are enrolled in modern foreign language or area studies programs, and who intend to pursue teaching careers. DDRA applications must be submitted electronically through the Graduate School. As part of the application process, students submit individual applications to the Graduate School. The Graduate School then officially submits all eligible individual student applications with its grant application to the Department of Education via the e-grants website. The actual level of funding, if any, depends on final congressional action. However, the following estimates can serve as a guide for potential applicants: Estimated Range of Fellowship Awards: $15,000 - $60,000. Estimated Average Size of Fellowship Awards: $30,000. Estimated Number of Fellowship Awards: 90. The institutional project period is 15 months beginning in October. Students may request funding for 6-12 months.

Applicants must pursue a research project that focuses on one or more of the following areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Western Hemisphere (only Canada, Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean) Please note that applications that propose projects focused on Western Europe will not be funded
Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. Students must be enrolled and in good standing in a doctoral program in modern foreign language or area studies. Students must be advanced to candidacy before activating an award (you don't have to be advanced to candidacy at the time of application, but must advance before July 1 in the year the grant begins).
