Department of Classics Undergraduate Summer Research and/or Travel Awards
Yale University
The Department of Classics Undergraduate Summer Research and/or Travel Awards are intended to help students fill out gaps in their learning and further their research skills by giving them a chance to visit ancient sites, travel to archives and/or research libraries oversees, take part in study programs and research groups, and so on. Preference will be given to students who are working on specific research projects, participating in approved archaeological excavations, or attending approved Latin or Greek language courses.
Application Information: You are strongly encouraged to consult a member of the faculty in Classics for advice about your application before submitting it. Application materials will not be accepted via email or in person and late applications will not be accepted.
A complete application consists of:
- Completed online Application Form
- Research Project Proposal: A proposal of 3-5 pages (double spaced) describing: a) the course of study they intend to pursue, as well as the rationale for that course of study in relation to their overall academic aims as majors; b) an exact itinerary for their travels, to include a day-to-day listing of the sites, museums and libraries they propose to visit (where relevant). Your Project Proposal must be uploaded and submitted electronically as a Word or PDF file.
- Budget: You will be required to submit a carefully researched budget outlining the expected costs involved in undertaking the activity you propose. Please see the Fellowships website for guidance on creating a feasible budget. Your budget must be uploaded and submitted electronically as a Word or PDF file.
Restrictions to Use of Award: Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. Budgets should not include compensation for lost income or funding towards the Student Income Contribution.
All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current UnitedHealthcareGlobal threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.
Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Click here to see if your project needs to be reviewed (click on "student projects"), for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the process and requirements.
Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please see a fellowships adviser for more information.
International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
For other funding possibilities, please consider the International Summer Award and these other resources.
The summer research and/or travel awards are open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who are declared Classics majors. (Graduating seniors are not eligible.)
If you are not a declared major but plan to participate in an archaeological dig administered by a member of the Yale Classics Faculty, please contact the DUS (pauline.leven@yale.edu) for approval of eligibility to apply. (Please note that one of the awards is available to Classics majors only.)
The awards are intended to support summer research and/or travel for a duration of at least 3 weeks.
