Overview

The Gavin Walkley Memorial Grant in Architecture has been established by Jane Walkley in memory of her father, Dr Gavin Walkley CBE, LFRAIA, who was a noted South Australian architect, town planner and academic. Dr Walkley spent 25 years (1951-76) as Head of the University's Louis Laybourne Smith School of Architecture and Design, during which time he greatly expanded the range of design and planning education on offer, by including subjects such as town planning, landscape design, and interior design.

The grant is designed to provide financial support to full-time students undertaking the first year of a Master of Architecture at the University of South Australia. Applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of their work undertaken during their Bachelor of Architectural Studies (or equivalent) program. The portfolio should include a maximum of two design projects undertaken individually by the applicant (including a brief design statement), a research based textual work (e.g. a History and Theory essay) and a covering letter. The work selected for the portfolio should demonstrate the applicant's developing skills and knowledge with an emphasis on architectural design, urban design and architectural history.

Selection will be based on the submitted portfolio, academic merit (Grade Point Average) and performance at an interview.

How to apply: Online applications will open 23 January 2023 - 31 March 2023 via my Scholarships.

Value: $10,000 to be paid in two instalments of $5,000 after the Study Period 2 and Study Period 5 census dates, provided the recipient continues to meet the grant criteria and maintain satisfactory academic performance.
