Overview

With the Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom program, Fulbright Germany offers German teachers the opportunity to get to know the American school system and the implementation of diversity and inclusion in the US school system.

The three-week seminar takes place at the renowned Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology in Columbus, Ohio.

The program offers

  • an overview of American school and education policy and the structure of the school system in the USA
  • an introduction to the political, historical, cultural, and social issues that drive the pedagogical concepts of equity, diversity, special education, and inclusion in the American education system
  • Discussions and workshops on the topics of "Equity and Diversity", "Special Education", "Multiple tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)", "Linguistic Diversity" and "Implicit Bias and Bullying in Schools"
  • an overview of the pedagogical education and training of teaching staff at American universities
  • Opportunities for professional exchange with American scientists, teachers and students, including practical visits to different types of schools
  • the opportunity to learn about the culture and history of this region through excursions and cultural events in Ohio

The seminar represents a contribution to the further training and internationalization of teachers in Germany. The comparison of the two school and education systems opens the view for other pedagogical methods for the participants, offers new teaching suggestions and many practical examples for your own teaching design, especially in the area of “Diversity and Inclusion Management”. In addition, the participants expand their knowledge of project and team work, deepen their presentation skills and their English language skills.

The seminar program gives the participants a wide range of opportunities to strengthen their interest in Germany and the German education system, thereby contributing to the German-American educational dialogue.

The program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The Fulbright Commission works closely with the Pedagogical Exchange Service on this program and would like to thank the ministries of education/senate administrations of the federal states and the participating schools for their support.
