Indigenous Law Students Program
Aurora Education Foundation
The Indigenous Law Student Program offers the successful candidate the unique opportunity to gain an insight into the Australian legal system. The Program is designed as an introduction to life at the Bar, encompassing three weeks internship with the Courts and in Barrister's chambers. An initiative of the Bar Association of Queensland, the Program operates in partnership with the Queensland and Federal Courts. The Program provides an innovative and solid foundation to support Indigenous students who are pursuing a career at the Bar, with the key objective of increasing the number of Indigenous barristers at the Queensland Bar.
The Program constitutes three weeks, within which the selected student will be exposed to different areas of law, learning from highly regarded and experienced members of the Bar and Judiciary.
The successful applicant will spend one week with a barrister, one week at the Federal Court of Australia and one week at the Supreme and/or District Court of Queensland. During this time the student may attend client conferences and Court as the opportunity arises, undertake research tasks along with the opportunity to observe cases on which his or her Honour is sitting.
Expenses incurred by the successful applicant in participating in the Program will be reimbursed or paid upfront by the Association (through the Mullenjaiwakka Trust), and the Courts.
The Mullenjaiwakka Trust was established to provide support to students from Indigenous backgrounds to undertake legal studies and to pursue a career at the Bar.
