History

The award was established by the ACS Fuel Chemistry Division and the ACS Pittsburgh Local Section in honor of Henry H. Storch, a physical chemist who made numerous contributions to coal chemistry and catalysis and was the director of research at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The award became a National Award in 1987 and was sponsored by Exxon until 1995. The Fuel Chemistry Division sponsored the award from 1996 to 2011, with co-sponsorship from Elsevier from 1998 to 2010. The award was sponsored by the ACS Division of Energy and Fuels from 2012 to 2018.
